Deeper in the mountains, beyond the Warashina tea-producing zone, we find Ôkawa. If we take the little road that climbs the Ôkawa mountains right to the end, we finally get to Ôma.
At 750 metres (2460 feet) in altitude, Mr. Nakamura grows a pure, rich tea that takes full advantage of the soil and lush natural setting. This sencha from Ôkawa may be the tardiest of the first spring harvest shinchas from Shizuoka owing to its geographical location and the resulting climate. There is something of the aromas of red fruit in the sweet fragrance of the beautiful large leaves of this traditionally-steamed Japanese green tea. In the mouth, the liquor is airy, but nonetheless has strength and density, which are underscored in a sweet, fruity aftertaste. Slight astringency can be felt beginning with the second infusion.
This mountain sencha is both rustic, in its flavours, but also very elegant. It provides an experience that can be had only with teas that have taken their strength from being nurtured in the mountains.
