In Ureshino, Ôta Yûsuke continues to produce traditional steamed tamaryokuchas even though deep steaming is in fashion. He uses neither pesticides nor chemical fertilizers. His teas have character and remind us of what tamaryokuchas could have been like when they were invented in the 1920s: steamed teas that must have resembled kama-iri chas.
The Tsuyu-hikari cultivar, an Asatsuyu and Shizu-7132 cross, seems to have inherited features from both of its parents. It has great umami mellowness, with both rich sweet aromas and also beany aspects. With this shaded tamaryokucha, Mr. Ôta brings out the sweet, fruity accents of this cultivar, and also notes of browned butter, as well as a mineral impression, which is a constant in this producer’s teas. In the mouth, while the first attack is lively, the aromas develop with a very sweet aftertaste, but there are also vegetal notes to provide depth.
This tamaryokucha concentrates very rich, mellow, sweet and fruity aromas in a very dense manner to produce a tea with punch and all the personality of the Tsuyu-hikari cultivar.
