This is the second gyokuro from Mr. Nishikawa on Thés du Japon. After the Asahi, here is thus the Gokô cultivar, the tea tree for gyokuro par excellence. Although it was mechanically harvested, this tea from Uji-Tawara is a true gyokuro in every way, and it is a pleasure to find the features of the Gokô cultivar.
The sweet fragrance of this tea blends very deep vegetal aromas with stimulating citrus aromas and a touch of ripe fruit. The entrance into the mouth is very powerful, with a lot of the umami typical of gyokuros. A miniscule touch of bitterness brings depth to the whole. Umami, strong but elegant, and fruit dominate. There is nothing vegetal in the mouth.
This tea has great length and a strong presence, but is never heavy.
Here is an excellent gyokuro from Uji-Tawara, the promise of a rich experience, and it would be even more interesting to drink it while comparing it with the Samidori by the same producer.

Brewing suggestion
  • Quantity of leaves: 4g / 1.3tsp
  • Quantity of water : 30ml / 1/8 cup
  • Water temperature : 60°C / 140°F
  • Brewing time : 90s
