Ryôgouchi is a famous tea-producing area in the mountains of Shimizu (Shizuoka). This is where Mr. Katahira works with passion, growing no fewer than 18 cultivars (varieties) of tea.
Kurasawa is an extremely unusual ancient cultivar that is best known for being crossed with Kanaya-midori, one of the progenitors of the much more famous Kôshun.
The leaves have a light but pleasant scent of country fields, blending dry grasses and little flowers. After infusion, we discover a more pronounced fragrance that recalls tiny wildflowers, which is not without bringing Kôshun to mind. A dominating feature in the mouth is pronounced, yet elegant and refined, astringency. The liquor is not tannin in the least. It slips down the throat fluidly, leaving rich, complex floral and vegetal flavours in the mouth, which finish by transforming into delicious long mellowness.
An aromatic tea that shows the pleasure that can be derived from sencha’s good refined astringency.
