In Gokase, Mr. Miyazaki is not only renowned for kama-iri cha, but also for his black teas.
Benihikari is a Japanese black tea cultivar developed in the 1960s when Japan was still producing black tea for export. At the time, Benihikari was highly esteemed, but did not spread because black tea stopped being produced. The cultivar then became a sort of legend, but in recent years it has started to reappear. While it remains somewhat in the shadow of Benifûki, Benihikari is nonetheless a very interesting black tea, quite distinctive and clearly recognizable.
This black tea from Gokase has the signature fragrance of menthol, with cinnamon and camphor notes.
At first it is very subtle in the mouth. There are the distinctive aromas of this cultivar, but with no stress or aggressiveness. The whole effect is rather airy, mellow and free of astringency. The aftertaste is light and a little sweet.
All things being equal, some may see similarities with certain black teas from Sri Lanka or Taiwan No. 18. This is a black tea with personality that is a good example of the Benihikari cultivar.
