The Kumas, father and son, from Jôyô-machi, a little mountain community in Yame, are known mainly for their sencha and gyokuro. However, in recent years, the son has been producing fine black teas using the Benifûki and Benihikari cultivars.
Registered in 1993, Benifûki is a cross between Benihomare and a Chinese variety, and indisputably the star of Japanese black tea cultivars.
To the nose, the first impression is green and fresh. Next, there are fruity and spicy aromas, a mixture of vanilla and green pepper.
In the mouth, there is first light, typical astringency. This Benifûki is rather light, but lingers in the mouth for a long time. The aromas are still fruity, recalling both summer fruit and sweet citrus.
This is a classical, elegant black tea that can also be infused strongly and enjoyed with a touch of milk.
