Developed in the 1960s, when Japan was still producing a lot of black tea, Benihikari is a cultivar for black tea that was highly esteemed at the time for its quality. However, the economic liberalization of Japanese international trade led to the end of black tea in Japan, and, in consequence, also to the end of the spread of Benihikari. Now, as Japanese black tea is undergoing a renewal, Benihikari is beginning to reappear, although it remains in the shadow of Benifûki.
This Japanese black tea from Jôyô-machi in Yame was produced by Kuma Masahiro, whose sencha and other black teas are also available on Thés du Japon. Here, we have a black tea that offers the aromas typical of the Benihikari variety: camphor, spices, cinnamon.
In the mouth, this tea has a lot of presence, with just the right touch of astringency for those who like black teas with character. The camphor aromas, which develop mainly in the background, are joined by an impression of caramel. The aftertaste is long and powerful.
An intense Japanese black tea, with the unique aromas of Benihikari.
