Karabeni is a black tea cultivar that was selected in 1956 at the Shizuoka Prefecture research centre from tea tree seeds brought to Japan from Hubei Province in China. It was never officially registered, and is very rare today. Yet, it has very interesting aromatic characteristics, very different from other Japanese black tea cultivars, which are of Indian origin.
To begin with, we are struck by the fragrance of this black tea. There is nothing comparable among other Japanese black teas. The sweet scents, floral and fruity at the same time, with notes of dry wood and leather, are of course very different from the mellowness of black teas made from cultivars intended for green tea, but they are also very different from the sweet spiciness of other Japanese black teas. Karabeni clearly evokes the aromas of certain black teas from mainland China.
In the mouth, there is no astringency, yet this tea is not cloying. It develops great, sweet, aromatic richness that is sometimes floral, sometimes fruity, evoking berry jam. What is perceived in the nose is clear in the mouth, and the notes of aged wood and leather bring texture and depth to the infusion. Although it is not an elite Grand Cru, this black tea nonetheless has superb aromatic wealth, and it is very balanced, with no heaviness. Above all, it is a very rare Japanese black tea, with fragrances that are clearly different from the rest of the black tea produced in Japan. It is one of my favourites, and black tea lovers will find it absolutely worth discovering.
