A menchuji, like a natsume, is a matcha tea caddy used for usucha in the tea ceremony. The key characteristic of this type of object is that it has a lid that goes halfway down the container.
This one is very richly decorated with chrysanthemum, paulownia and autumn grass motifs executed with great delicacy and precision.
The artist who created the decoration is the maki-e master, Wada Juhô.
Yamanaka (Kaga City, Ishikawa Prefecture) lacquerware is proud of its history, which dates back more than 500 years.

Lacquer from Yamanaka (Kaga City) on untreated chestnut wood.
Stenciled maki-e using pure silver powder.
