Umehara Shôji, alias Shôryû, is one of the most well-known traditional craftsmen in Tokoname. One of his greatest qualities is the ability to create very light teapots: it is said that, volume for volume, his are the lightest in Japan. This is made possible by his mixture of clays and by his dexterity when he handles the clay on the wheel.
This kyûsu teapot is in red clay, characteristic of Tokoname and Japanese teapots in general. It is the first in a series of four kyûsu teapots that Thés du Japon ordered from Shôryû. They all contain 230 ml / 7.7 oz (when filled right to the top) but they have been fired using different techniques.
This one is the most classical. Fired in oxydation, in other words, with enough oxygen in the kiln, this teapot has remained red.
This kyûsu is very light, with an excellent feel in the hand, and its wide lid makes it easy to rinse.

Ceramic filter.
