The lacquer tradition in Japan dates back over 1500 years, but today this customary art remains living and inventive, sensitive to design and modernity, as can be seen from this matt black lacquer ware cup from Echizen, Fukui Prefecture.
Its modern, refined shape recalls that of a cocoon, or ''mayu'' in Japanese.
Handmade according to traditional Japanese lacquer ware techniques, the untreated Japanese chestnut wood core was turned and then hardened with lacquer. Next, two layers of lacquer were applied with the greatest care. (Both the wood and lacquer are from Japan.)
With warm liquid, the odor of lacquer comes out, but over time it disappears, and this lacquer ware then becomes an elegant cup for all kinds of tea, and for coffee too.

-Before use, wash the cup in warm water, dry it with a very soft cloth, and then leave the cup in a dark, well-aired place for several days. The lacquer smell will disappear completely.
However, with a warm drink, such as tea or coffee, the smell of lacquer will come out again, though it will gradually disappear over time.
-Wash with water and possibly a little dish washing liquid.
-Never rub it with anything abrasive!
-Do not put it in the dishwasher.
-Do not put it on the stove or in the microwave.
