After nearly 1500 years of history, lacquer ware in Japan is still very much alive, and continues to create refined, elegant, modern objects, such as this ''mayu'' cup with a shape recalling a cocoon.
This red lacquer cup from Echizen has been made entirely by hand by Echizen artisans in Fukui Prefecture, from the core of untreated chestnut wood to the succession of layers of polished lacquer, which give it so much presence. (Both the wood and lacquer are from Japan.)
Containing 140 ml (4.7 oz), this traditional work is perfect for drinking different alcoholic beverages, as well as iced tea or coffee.
With warm liquid, the odor of lacquer comes out, but over time it disappears, and this lacquer ware then becomes an elegant cup for all kinds of tea, and for coffee too.

-Before use, wash the cup in warm water, dry it with a very soft cloth, and then leave the cup in a dark, well-aired place for several days. The lacquer smell will disappear completely.
However, with a warm drink, such as tea or coffee, the smell of lacquer will come out again, though it will gradually disappear over time.
-Wash with water and possibly a little dish washing liquid.
-Never rub it with anything abrasive!
-Do not put it in the dishwasher.
-Do not put it on the stove or in the microwave.
