Making this kind of very flat, very wide, flat-bottomed kyûsu teapot is particularly difficult, requiring extraordinary dexterity and skill on the wheel from the artisan, Isobe Teruyuki. Yet, the shape is not a simple curiosity. It is conceived to bring out the best in the finest classical steamed Japanese green teas, especially the exquisite mountain senchas made of long, straight whole leaves.

- The very wide, flat bottom makes it possible to infuse a large quantity of large leaves in an optimal manner with a minimal amount of water.
- A very broad surface of water is thus in contact with the air, allowing it to cool quickly, which is perfect since with many Japanese teas we seek to bring out the sweetness thanks to water that is not too hot. At the same time, this type of “sekki” clay keeps the heat very well.
Thus, by allying these two characteristics, we can use the lid to easily regulate and control the infusion temperature from one time to the next.
- The wide opening allows a clear view of the way the leaves open so as to better gauge the best time to pour the tea.
