This magnificent banko-yaki teapot is the work of Shimizu Suigetsu the Third, the head of the very famous Suigetsu workshop.
In addition to the delicacy of the work, in particular on the filter, and the lightness of the object, Suigetsu’s teapots made from purple shidei clay are remarkable for their very fine motifs, which are neither painted nor molded, but truly engraved on the surface of the object after firing. Thanks to meticulous masking, the surface is engraved by sanding. The differences in tones are created by playing on the depth of the engraving, since one of the characteristics of purple shidei banko-yaki clay is that it is of different colours, depending on how deeply it is cut.
This teapot is both a splendid work of art and a veritable high-quality tool for preparing tea.
