A banko-yaki artisan, son of a pottery kiln maker and grandson of a fine potter, Yamamoto Taisen’s field of vision goes far beyond the purple clay typical of Banko-yaki. For example, he uses glazes and different types of clay. His work is fine and very light, and, for banko-yaki, the price-quality ratio is excellent.
This “daruma”-shaped kyûsu teapot is decorated with “hidasuki” motifs. This technique, which is seen only rarely in Yokkaichi (where banko-yaki clay is produced), involves wrapping straw around the object before firing it. This leaves orange motifs on the surface of the piece.
