Yamada Yûtarô is a very young potter from Tokoname who specializes in teapots and is already displaying incredible talent. The son of a Tokoname potter specializing in pots and vases, Yûtarô’s enthusiasm for tea has led him down the very difficult path of making kyûsu teapots. Today in Japan, young potters very rarely choose to perpetuate the craft of kyûsu making as a specialty. Moreover, he makes his own clay.
His teapots are extremely light and they handle remarkably well.

Broad, flat Tokoname hiragata kyûsu teapots, which require a very high level of technical skill to make, allow a lot of leaves to be infused with very little water, but also provide easy control over the temperature of each infusion. In addition, they let you watch the leaves open to judge when to pour. They are ideal tools for so-called “futsumushi” and “asamushi” senchas, as well as for gyokuros and kabuse-chas.

The mogake motifs, typical of Tokoname and obtained during firing thanks to amamo seaweed wrapped around the teapot, are especially effective on beige clay. Mogake on light-coloured clay like this is relatively unusual in Tokoname.
