Hayashi Jun.ichirô is a Hasami-yaki potter who has made the original choice of working essentially in yaki-shime clay, even though Hasami, in Ngasaki Prefecture on the Island of Kyûshû, is famous for its porcelain. Many tea-producing and pottery-making areas are scattered across the Island of Kyûshû, but few potters have invested strong effort in making teapots.  Hayashi Jun.ichirô is self-taught, and has taken up this challenge. He not only produces kyûsus, but does so using local clays.
For this teapot, with its elegant shape and very handsome effects from the fire, the potter used a substrate composed mainly of Karatsu clay (karatsu-yaki in Saga) mixed with a little Hasami clay. It is therefore a very daring work, with the thick grain of Karatsu clay.
