Here is a tea from Kirishima in the north of Kagoshima Prefecture. This is the Asanoka cultivar, a variety that came from crossing a Chinese variety. While Kagoshima teas are generally quite standardized and uniform, Asanoka is one of the rare beacons of originality in the region. It has unique fragrances despite having been shaded the same as other Kagoshima teas.
The infusion reveals a light, yet intense fragrance. The aromas are sweet and fruity, foreshadowing the umami of this tea and evoking pears and mangoes.
This sencha is without astringency. It charms the palate with its smoothness, sweetness and subtle umami. Once again, we find the gently, fruity aromas of the Asanoka cultivar.
This is a delicious, elegant, light sencha with a refined umami and unique characteristics. Despite its lightness, it is quite different from other Kagoshima teas.
