Shizu-7132

Shizu-7132 is unregistered. It is one of the varieties that was selected and developed from Yabukita seeds at the Shizuoka Prefecture research centre in 1967. These varieties are all coded as Shizu-7XXX. They include, for example, Yamakai (Shizu-7166) and Kurasawa (Shizu-7111). Even though it is unregistered, it has still managed to become popular in Shizuoka thanks to its resistance to cold, highly appreciated in mountainous areas. (It was once called “shimoshirazu,” which means “does not know freezing.”) It is also known as “Machiko” in the Shimizu area, and sometimes it is sold as “sakura-kaori” because of its characteristic sweet scent reminiscent of “sakura-mochi,” a Japanese sweet made with pickled cherry leaves. This highly recognizable fragrance results from a high concentration of coumarin. Finally, this variety also has umami.
