Sayama-midori

This cultivar was selected in Saitama in 1953 from indigenous “zarai” tea tree seeds from Uji. It is one of the first 15 cultivars registered in Japan. It has a unique sweet flavour as well as fragrances reminiscent of dried herbs. This variety’s thick leaves need to be handled skilfully or else they break. It was very popular before all the attention turned to Yabukita. Time of harvest: mid-season.
