Floral
There are still only a few tea producers in Japan capable of making great oolongs. Renown for his Kôju, Mr. Takahashi from Hon.yama is part of this exclusive club of producers. When making oolong, Mr. Takahashi uses Taiwanese machines and, in some cases, also uses Taiwanese cultivars. This is a Japanese oolong made with a variety from Taiwan. It was made using a mechanically harvested spring tea.
This tea has very distinct sweet floral fragrance, which has great intensity in retro-olfaction. In the mouth, the infusion is light yet very present. It starts with a sweet sensation—evoking fruit candy and coconut—that then continues into the length with a floral impression.
Subsequent infusions also deliver floral notes, which evoke violets and lavender.
The aftertaste remains very intense and delectable.
While Mr. Takahashi’s mechanically harvested oolongs are sometimes less impressive than his handpicked teas this Harumeguri is a masterpiece.
