Asanoka is one of the cultivars from Kagoshima that is among most interesting in terms of aromas, bringing with it more than simply the umami many of the region’s other teas are known for. The cultivar develops its aromas very well even when shaded, as is the case for most Kagoshima teas. However, in this case, the tea has the rare feature of being unshaded.
In the nose, this fine fukamushi delivers very sweet, fruity fragrances and has a very balanced roasting.
On the palate, the infusion is dense, rich in umami, very present, yet also elegant. The astringency is negligible. And here again, we find sweetness and intensely fruitiness.
The fruity aromas become more distinct in subsequent infusions, which are always very round while evoking mangoes and tropical fruits. The tea also has green vegetable and delicate flower nuances. And in the mouth, we find a powerful persistence.
This Asanoka fukamushi sencha from Chiran is truly wonderful in terms of its roundness and the richness of its aromas, which are exceptional for a fukamushi. Being unshaded, it also has a truly unexpected character for a tea from Kagoshima.
