Arita porcelain from Saga Prefecture is often considered to have the oldest tradition in Japan, beginning in the seventeenth century under the impetus of a potter who had emigrated from Korea. Those porcelain works were subsequently exported to Europe through the port at Imari, which gave its name to this style of Japanese porcelain in the West.

This cup is decorated with splendid “shunjû-mon” motifs, that is to say, motifs evoking the spring and fall. These ones were presented in 1876 at the Universal Exhibition in Philadelphia.
