Arita porcelain from Saga Prefecture is often considered to have the oldest tradition in Japan, beginning in the seventeenth century under the impetus of a potter who had emigrated from Korea. Those porcelain works were subsequently exported to Europe through the port at Imari, which gave its name to this style of Japanese porcelain in the West.

The splendid, delicate, elegant motifs of plum trees and chrysanthemums on this teacup and saucer set were made using the “iroe” technique, which involves applying pigments on the fired surface of the porcelain and then putting the work in the kiln again for oxidation firing at low temperature.
