This small lacquer cup from Echizen, Fukui Prefecture, with a modern design has been handmade using traditional Japanese lacquer ware methods.
The extremely fine core made from untreated Japanese chestnut wood was turned and covered in lacquer to harden it. Then two layers of lacquer were applied, each of which was polished.
(Both the wood and lacquer are from Japan.)
This remarkable, very light object is perfect for alcohol, Japanese “nihonshu” sake, of course, but why not also iced tea, to which this cup will lend a sober, elegant feeling, but also a typically Japanese character, since the tradition of lacquer in Japan dates back over 1500 years.
With warm liquid, the odor of lacquer comes out, but over time it disappears, and this lacquer ware then becomes an elegant cup for all kinds of tea, and for coffee too.

Maintenance

-Before use, wash the cup in warm water, dry it with a very soft cloth, and then leave the cup in a dark, well-aired place for several days. The lacquer smell will disappear completely.
However, with a warm drink, such as tea or coffee, the smell of lacquer will come out again, though it will gradually disappear over time.
-Wash with water and possibly a little dish washing liquid.
-Never rub it with anything abrasive!
-Do not put it in the dishwasher.
-Do not put it on the stove or in the microwave.
