Established in order to create tea ceremony accessories in Uji, the historical centre of Japanese tea close to Kyôto, Asahi-yaki has now also become famous for its clay and porcelain works designed for sencha.
Here is a blue-glazed “kahinseiki” porcelain cup in the shape known as “asagao” (morning glory). The curve of the inside surface has been subtly adjusted to make the edges of the cup perfect for taking small sips of tea.
The inside has been glazed white so that the colour of the tea can be appreciated.
