The technique for dyeing fabric blue using pigments from the plant known as dyer’s knotweed or indigofera tinctoria is called ''ai-zome.'' Tokushima Prefecture is famous for this tradition.
The chrysanthemum motifs that decorate the paper covering this 200 g (7 oz) steel box are inspired by this type of traditional Japanese dyeing.
