Asahi-yaki was founded over 400 years ago in Uji, the cultural centre of tea and matcha in Japan, in order to create accessories (bowls, cha-ire, etc.) related to the tea ceremony, which was then in full expansion. It remains a family-run workshop, and is still close to the tea world. In the nineteenth century, Asahi-yaki began to make accessories for sencha also: cups, but especially hôhins. In the Kyôto area, this type of handleless teapot is more popular than kyûsus.
This hôhin is made from clay gathered in the mountains of Uji. It has been glazed, and its design creates a warm, simple feeling. The distinctive feature of Uji mountain clay is that it is very light.
The typical graceful Asahi-yaki shape of this hôhin makes it a perfectly designed instrument, tailor-made for preparing high-quality Japanese tea. The spout allows the tea to be poured very cleanly, the very broad filter is pierced with 150 holes, and the shape of the opening holds the leaves and liquid well during pouring, while making later removal of the used leaves very easy. Finally, the lid fits perfectly to provide a tight seal.
