Arita porcelain from Saga Prefecture is often considered to have the oldest tradition in Japan, beginning in the seventeenth century under the impetus of a potter who had emigrated from Korea. Those porcelain works were subsequently exported to Europe through the port at Imari, which gave its name to this style of Japanese porcelain in the West.

Hirado in Nagasaki was Japan’s point of trade and commerce with Europe for almost 100 years before the borders were closed. “Shonzui” refers to a type of blue coloring on porcelain of Chinese origin, which was very popular with the Matsuura lords of Hirado.
