Astringency (tannins): ★☆☆
Registered in 1969, right before the Japanese government stopped supporting black tea production, Benihikari never experienced the same developments that Benifûki later underwent. Benihikari results from a cross that gives it Japanese, Indian, and Chinese roots. The recent resurgence of black tea production in Japan has led to developments for Benihikari, such as with this tea from Sayama.
With its relatively strong roasting, this summer Benihikari is initially sweet with accents of honey. We also find the cultivar’s classic camphor notes and cinnamon nuances.
Despite being a summer harvest, the tea has almost no astringency in the mouth. Initially, the infusion is subtly sweet with sweet spice, woody aromas. And in the finish in the mouth, we find berry nuances.
Another wonderful example of the excellent Benihikari cultivar.
