Benihikari is a black tea cultivar registered in 1969, and is the last one registered before Benifûki in 1993. Due to its quality and its Indian, Japanese and Cheese roots, Benihikari brought much hope; however, Benihikari is now much less widespread than Benifûki because the efforts to export black tea stopped at the end of the 1970s. With the recent developments of quality in the production of black tea, Benihikari has started to become a popular alternative to Benifûki.
With its very recognizable camphor and almost minty fragrance, the infusion undeniably comes from a Benihikari tea. Outside of these aromas, there are fruity notes that evoke berries and citrus fruits.
In addition to a very light tannic sensation, this spring black tea is rather velvety on the palate. Here, the camphor tendency is towards lightness without being excessive. In the mouth, the sensation is smooth, evoking sweet potatoes without being excessively sweet. The end of mouth is also subtly floral.
This excellent Benihikari from Sayama is classic, delicate, and deep.
