The Oku-musashi cultivar is almost impossible to find in Saitama—the place from where it originates. And this cultivar is even harder to find in Ureshino, located at 500 m (1640 ft) in altitude. Registered in 1962, Oku-musashi comes from a cross between Sayama-midori and Yamato-midori, two cultivars that are also ancient and rare.
Like Sayama-midori’s other descendants, Oku musashi is well adapted to being wilted. So, it is very interesting to see Oku musashi used in a black tea.
In the nose, the fragrance is intense and has lemon, woody, and red berry notes.
In the mouth, this summer black tea is round, is absolutely not tannic, but does not lack complexity. A sweet, woody sensation appears initially. Then, there are very rich, slightly lemony, fruity aromas that are very reminiscent of red berries. Peach compote nuances develop in the finish, delivering a very persistent delicious sensation in the mouth.
The rare Oku-musashi cultivar delivers a very unique delicate, rich black tea with an incredible aftertaste.
