  • Gyokuro from Asahina, Gokô cultivar 30g

This gyokuro comes from Asahina in Fujieda, Shizuoka Prefecture. Asahina is generally considered to be one of the three great gyokuro tea production regions, alongside Uji and Yame. Despite Asahina’s reputation, the production is rather exclusive and is at risk of disappearing.
This particular tea was made using the famous Gokô cultivar from Uji. It was cultivated in an unpruned “shizen-shitate” tea garden, tent-shaded and handpicked.
The dense infusion of this gyokuro offers a sweet vegetal fragrance, characteristic of shaded teas. There are also fruity, bitter berry notes.
The umami is obviously very strong and coats the palate. Initially, we find sweet vegetal sensation. Finally, in the length, we have Gokô’s characteristic fruity aromas that evoke figs. In the mouth, the persistence is sweet, particular intense, and powerful.
The gyokuro is very mild, is without astringency, is not heavy, and takes advantage of Gokô’s qualities. Perhaps less intense than the more recent cultivars from Saemidori, but this tea is very mellow and aromatic. It is tea that is particularly adapted to gyokuro style infusions.
