Nagomi-yutaka is a new cultivar that was developed at the Miyazaki Research Center and registered in 2010. The cultivar was noticed not only for sencha, but also for kama-iri cha. The cultivar was also found to be well adapted to the production of oolong, reacting wonderfully to being withered. As a result, it is only natural to see this cultivar get used, as in this case with this withered sencha from Kawane.
Opening the package sets the tone. We are offered an enchanting floral fragrance from the dried leaves. This impression is confirmed in the infusion, which has a strong, sweet, floral fragrance that evokes lavender. We also find the fragrance on the palate, which hits first and makes us almost think we have a lightly oxidized oolong. After this first impression, we notice a light umami that is more characteristic of steamed teas. We also find a very moderate astringency.
The second and third infusions strengthen the exceptional floral fragrance, especially in the nose.
It is completely unexpected to see a withered sencha deliver this type floral fragrance, which is particularly intense. But also, the infusion is especially clean and fluid, which is also unusual to see in a steamed green tea produced in this way.
While this Nagomi-yutaka sencha is simple and its floral domination is clear and uniform, the tea is also incredibly aromatic.
It is something of a fusion—which is rarely so successful—between a steamed green tea and a lightly oxidized, lightly roasted oolong.
