The highly experienced Murata Yoshiki is one of the leading “kyûsu shokunin” potters in Tokoname. His work is known for its technical and artistic daring, a desire to stand out from the run of the mill. The hammered surface of his teapots is one of the major marks of his work.

Beyond the clay they use, another particularity of this uncommon artisan is also their use of kilns in other production locations. In this case, the pottery was made using clay from Tanegashima Island that was fired in a wood kiln on the same island. We now generally speak of Tanegashima-yaki when describing this style of pottery, but this tradition originates with the older Yokino-yaki.
