Fujiwara Akira is a young Bizen-yaki potter who, based in Wake, just north of Bizen, works essentially with mountain clays that he digs directly from the areas around his workshop. This clearly sets him aside from most of the Bizen potters, who work with rice paddy clay. He fires his works in anagama and noborigama kilns.

The red tones of this hôhin were obtained by firing it in the least hot areas of the anagama kiln.
This type of firing recalls Bizen from the sixteenth century.
