In the world of Uji tea, the city of Kyô-tanabe is often seen as the Mecca of high-quality gyokuro. Here is a tent-shaded gyokuro that was handpicked and came from an “shizen-shitate” unpruned tea garden. Along with Gokô and Samidori, the Uji-hikari cultivar is one of the main varieties for gyokuros from Uji.
This gyokuro provides a rich, complex, sweet fragrance with notes of coconut and custard.
On the palate, the infusion is quite velvety and has deeply intense umami. It has absolutely no astringency. There is also a very sweet sensation with fruity, creamy aromas.
The sweet aftertaste evokes pears.
Here is a gyokuro that remains perfectly fluid despite its denseness.
This Uji-hikari is a first-rate, intense, complex gyokuro.
