Cultivar and technical information
In the world of Uji tea, the city of Kyô-tanabe is often seen as the Mecca of high-quality gyokuro. Here is a tent-shaded gyokuro that was handpicked and came from an “shizen-shitate” unpruned tea garden. Along with Gokô and Samidori, the Uji-hikari cultivar is one of the main varieties for gyokuros from Uji.
The nose
This Uji-hikari gyokuro is light and subtly fruity fragrances. The nuances are of berry and citrus fruit flavoured candies.
The mouth
The umami from the infusion is extremely intense and velvety. There is no astringency and the tea’s very sweet flavours are very present, giving this gyokuro an exceptional roundness and smoothness. There is a very dense persistence with fruity nuances of juicy pears.
Summary
This Uji-hikari is an example of the umami of gyokuro from Kyô-tanabe; it is very powerful, yet very elegant and without heaviness.
