Kondô-wase is a very rare, very early variety, belonging to the “inzatsu” category (which means it is an Indian hybrid), it comes from a cross between Yabukita and Inzatsu 131. This sencha from Mariko in Shizuoka is another tea by Mr. Matsukawa, but it is a different batch from the one I present in the spring.
Even when infused in very hot water, this sencha has no astringency, and its umami is fine yet dense.
While its fragrance is very light to the nose, in the mouth this Kondô-wase is extremely aromatic, with very special scents that can be found only in this type of inzatsu cultivar. Most remarkable in this case are aromas of green grapes, but there are also notes of green peas and a little touch of pepper.
This is a truly unique tea that can make up to four marvelous infusions. It is never astringent, always very fluid and in the end the fragrances tend towards the floral.
